Want to move past trauma?
Counselling doesn’t appeal to everyone. For some, just the thought of talking about what happened brings up uncomfortable feelings and can get quite overwhelming.
What can you do when you want to move past the experiences holding you back, but you’re not ready to talk about the pain?
If you’re ready to live a more optimum life with less anxiety, more regulated feelings, and a better sense of overall balance, Deep Brain Reorienting therapy could be a solution.
What is Deep Brain Reorienting?
Deep Brain Reorienting is a structured, body-based therapy that can help you process trauma without dredging up old pain and memories.
Even before we enter ‘Fight or Flight Mode’ when we consciously recognise a threat, our deep brain has already taken physical steps in an attempt to protect us. The brain’s first instinct is to look at the threat, activating the muscles in our eyes, neck and forehead.
Deep Brain Reorienting or DBR targets those original neurophysical steps, the traumatic and attachment shock, that often comes before and drives our fight or flight responses. In a way, our brainstem and those muscles can be holding onto the trauma, and a key part of being able to move on with your life is letting go of that trauma.
What does Deep Brain Reorienting look like?
Rather than going into detail of the traumatic event, I might ask you to think of a trigger – perhaps something unrelated, or a small part of the initial traumatic memory. From there, I’ll guide you to focus on the orienting tension – feelings or sensations in the muscles in your face, head and neck. By processing these sensations, multiple studies have shown that DBR can reduce PTSD symptoms, improve sleep patterns, and generally help people feel comfortable in their own skin again.
Because I’m not asking you to confront the underlying event at the core of your issues, DBR is not as overwhelming as many other trauma therapies. At the same time, DBR can also help you process trauma at a deeper level of your brain, helping you improve your mental health and overall wellbeing.
